Mobius Circle. The name is after a mathematical phenomenon: a ring with only one side. As mysterious as that may sound to everyone else in the town of “Knowledge”, I find it fitting that a person who only shows one dimension of himself be called that name. But there is another side to it all.
I remember it like it was yesterday. I was ten at the time and I first discovered my love for magic reading a book about a famous magician who went under the name of Riddler. Don Riddler was his name and he did all sorts of tricks. But his most famous were his card tricks. He could swindle anyone out of their money if they played poker or blackjack with him. Well, if they were stupid enough to challenge him. I got my set of magic cards from him as I watched him perform at the circus. He told me, you can do anything with these cards, and I believed him because he was Don Riddler.
I took my set of cards to my run down apartment in the southern end of Knowledge and looked over each one. There were cards for ice spells, cards for fire spells, cards for weapons and tools. I separated them all outside and went out to practice.
I pull out a fire spell card and focus… I throw the card high into the air and it explodes! Fireballs spew out from the spinning card in all directions. “WOW” I said as I watched it.
“WHAT ARE YOU DOING MOBIUS!?” my mother runs out screaming at me. I look down and The house has caught on fire! I shuffle quickly through my deck of cards for a water spell and I throw it at the house.
The fire dies down. The house is ruined. My mother is furious! “Mobius! What have you done?”
“I was just practicing some magic mom! I didn’t want this to happen!” I start to cry. My mother looks at me with the same fire that was engulfing our house but this time it was deep in her eyes. “I cant believe you thought it would be cool to set our house on fire. I told you not to mess with magic. It’s dangerous! And now look what happened!” Furious and scared, I ran away that day. I decided to join the local circus. The same one that Don Riddler performed in. That’s where I got my jester costume. Under the tutoring and mentoring of Riddler I learned many things, like how you only get as much as you put in unless its gambling.
After eight years of traveling in the circus I finally decided to go back home. Maybe they forgave me.
Shocked at the sight I found my house burned to the ground along with the corpses of my brother, my dad and my mom who had a flower growing by her hand. The damned war had taken them. I wasn’t going to let them take me too. I grabbed the only things I had left. My deck of cards, my jester costume, and what was left of my life along with that very flower that grew in my mother’s hand.
I still love you mother. Please forgive me.
